How can I get the justice I deserve after a car accident?

The first thing you want to do is deal with any medical issues. Do this right away. Depending on the severity of the crash, there may be an ambulance, and you may be admitted to the hospital. But regardless of how you get to the hospital, make sure that you tend to any medical emergencies first.

After tending to medical emergencies, you’ll want to call a lawyer. If you are comfortable calling a plaintiff lawyer be aware that they typically work off of a free consultation type basis.

When you meet with the lawyer, depending on your condition, it’s always helpful to have photographs. It’s important that photos as soon as possible because many of factors can change quickly—especially the scene. Depending on the severity of the accident and your current state, it’s important to have you or a family member/friend go to the scene and take photographs.

Photograph the following at an accident:

  • Where the accident occurred
  • Any conditions of the roadway
  • Scene
  • Vehicle damage

In addition to when you decide on a lawyer that you feel comfortable with, we suggest that you bring essential documents to your initial consultation.

Essential information to provide to your attorney after an injury:

  • Any diagnosis
  • Bring a list of healthcare providers.  Provide the ambulance district, the name of the hospital, names of follow up care providers and any follow-up instructions.  You will also need your primary doctor’s information.
  • Police report or police report number
  • Information on the parties or other party involved
  • Your insurance information

As far as what you shouldn’t do, it’s important that you do not provide information regarding your injury to anyone other than your medical providers. Obviously, provide a statement to the law enforcement if they ask for it. However, a lot of times an insurance company will call or come to the hospital or your house. Always tell them that you’re not willing to discuss any part of your injuries (even simply whether or not you were injured) and turn them away.  These conversations are recorded.  When you’re in the midst of anxiety and stress you may not be aware of what you’re saying, and the recording may be used against you later.
